Kitchen timers will change the way you cook
Kitchen timers are the key to making things perfect. I find it oddly uncommon for people use timers when they are cooking at home. These things are small elements that can change everything when it comes to cooking. And it is the tools that we use in the kitchen that make everything easier and taste better. Oven thermometers and food thermometers are two others that, when used together, make a whole lot of difference in the end.
Setting the scene
Picture a beautiful roast that you have just gotten all ready to go in the oven for a family gathering. You put it in the oven and figure that you know to take it out at a specific time. So you start working on all of these amazing sides that are going to go with it. There may be a pause here and there to have a conversation and catch up with someone or be introduced to somebody’s new significant other. You make it back to working on some more sides and suddenly, it is well past when you meant to take that roast out. It is well beyond overcooked.
This could have been easily solved by just setting a timer. We all have them in our pockets on our phones now so there is no excuse. There are even timers on our smart home devices. The reason I prefer to go with a kitchen timer on these occasions however is the ability to set multiple timers at once.
Multiple kitchen timers
Multiple timers are key when making multiple things such as casseroles or other oven bound foods. They also help with non oven bound items. Things like boiling your potatoes for a potato salad or mashed potatoes. Over boiling potatoes will make them fall apart and turn into a potato water when not watched. But they can also turn very gritty when the starches get boiled even slightly too long. This can make for some potato salad that just falls apart. Or make it so that those silky smooth mashed potatoes that you were aiming for turn into a gritty and gluey side dish.
Time Management
The timer also helps with time management. Everything that is cooked takes a different amount of time and heat. So the timer combined with some planning helps make it so that everything comes out at roughly the same time. Because who wants some hot potatoes with a cold turkey or vise versa. It also helps you make sure that you are resting the meats for the proper amount of time.
So what I am really trying to say is that a kitchen timer can be a simple thing that makes your food WOW your guests. And they’ll never know that the love that they are tasting in your food is because of a little added management of time.

One response to “Kitchen timers and why you need them”
[…] Phones can be very helpful with this, but I still find that kitchen timers are a necessity. Especially ones with multiple options. Say you have to leave the house for something but someone is still at home. The timer goes off there and lets them know to take it out. I’m rambling now so just check out my article on kitchen timers. […]
