Watermelon agua fresca. There’s nothing more refreshing than this super simple drink on a hot day. Just a few ingredients and a blender can make life better in a few sips.
The weather here in the southeast is starting to get to that unbearable “stay inside” temperature. In Charleston South Carolina, we have been at a “feels like” temperature of around 106°F every day. And it’s only getting hotter. So it’s time to cool down with a nice glass of this oh-so-refreshing drink.
A Simple Recipe
Water and watermelon are essentially all this drink needs. But for a full flavored summer day watermelon agua fresca, I needed a little something more. Honey helps boost the sweetness. While the lime and salt help to keep that refreshing flavor in the front of it all. The mint is just a simple add in to bring all of the flavors together into a beautiful marriage on a summer afternoon.
After everything is blended, try smacking a sprig of mint between your palms and letting it steep in the agua fresca for 10 minutes before serving. Or if it’s one of those kind of evenings, add a shot of rum or tequila to your glass before filling it with ice and the agua fresca for a well deserved evening with your feet up.
To make this recipe, all you need is a blender. That’s it!
Blenders are a very useful tool in the kitchen. Wether it’s a standing countertop blender or a stick (immersion) blender, having one on hand is a game changer. Especially when making vinaigrettes and refreshing drinks!
Making the Watermelon Agua Fresca
Start by cutting the watermelon in half and breaking it down into manageable chunks that will fit in a blender. Make sure to remove all outer green and white layers.
Start by putting the watermelon, water, lime juice, honey, and salt into the blender.
Now blend until you have a nice smooth liquid. You may choose to strain this with a cheese cloth but i find that it tastes perfect the way it is.
Finally, pour over ice in glasses to serve and garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy!
